Our History
The Charles Wesley Music Foundation was established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a deep reverence for the legacy of Charles Wesley, a towering figure in Christian hymnody. Charles Wesley, along with his brother John, was a co-founder of Methodism in the 18th century. Wesley’s prolific output of over 6,500 hymns has inspired generations of worshippers, and many of his hymns remain central to Methodist worship to this day.
At Sewickley United Methodist Church, the Wesleyan tradition of integrating music into spiritual life has been a foundational element of worship. Recognizing the vital role that music plays in fostering spiritual growth and community cohesion, the Charles Wesley Music Foundation was formed to ensure that this legacy continues to flourish. The Foundation supports not only the Church’s music ministries but also a broad array of educational programs designed to inspire and nurture musicians of all ages.
The Foundation’s key project, the Restore the Organ campaign, symbolizes its commitment to preserving the instruments that have been integral to worship for over a century. The Foundation’s history is one of service to both the Church and the broader community, providing opportunities for worship, education, and the celebration of music in all its forms.
Our Mission
The mission of the Charles Wesley Music Foundation is simple but profound: to use the power of music to inspire, educate, and enrich lives. The Foundation seeks to:
Enhance Worship: By supporting choirs, instrumental ensembles, and music education at Sewickley United Methodist Church, the Foundation ensures that worship services are filled with meaningful, spiritually enriching music. The Foundation provides resources for everything from choir robes to sheet music, ensuring that every musical performance enhances the spiritual experience of the congregation.
Foster Music Education: The Foundation is committed to providing educational opportunities for aspiring musicians, from young children just beginning their musical journeys to adults seeking to deepen their musical skills. Scholarships, workshops, and performance opportunities are offered to help musicians grow, learn, and share their talents with the community.
Preserve Musical Heritage: Recognizing the importance of history, the Foundation is dedicated to preserving the Church’s rich musical traditions. Projects like the Restore the Organ campaign are essential to this goal, ensuring that the instruments central to worship continue to inspire future generations.
Build Community Through Music: Music has the unique ability to bring people together. The Foundation supports concerts, recitals, and community events that celebrate music as a means of connection and shared experience. These events are open to all, inviting both church members and the broader community to experience the joy of music.
Through these efforts, the Charles Wesley Music Foundation carries forward the Wesleyan tradition of using music to uplift the soul, connect with the divine, and build a stronger, more connected community.
